Love in the Crimea

Sławomir Mrożek

‘The action in the play Love in the Crimea begins with a Chekhov-like scene in the tsarist era, continues at the end of the 1920s and finally ends up in the post-communist era at the start of the 1990s. The stage production shows what the tsarist era was like, how people were and behaved. It shows how people are distorted under the conditions of the Stalinist era and how space changes. Only the view of the sea through the window remains the same. And finally, all walls and things disappear. Only the deserted beach remains – a hoodlum basking in the sunshine.’ (Director Hendrik Toompere)

Love in the Crimea is one of Sławomir Mrożek’s most substantial plays. It was completed in the early 1990s. By the time he wrote it, Mrożek had already had a long and productive creative career, the masterpieces of which, like Tango and The Émigrés, are also familiar to the Estonian public. Love in the Crimea is this Polish absurdist writer’s panoramic view of his homeland’s mysterious neighbour, Russia. Mrożek skilfully weaves together motifs and themes familiar from cultural history, but a painful grotesque develops out of the pastiche. Three symbolic periods are chosen as the time of the action, and the characters have to cope with the changes and turnabouts of those times. One character’s attempt to address a stranger could serve as an expressive summary of all this: ‘Excuse me, sir…Excuse me, comrade…Do you speak English?’

Premiere: 16 February 2019 on the Big Stage.

Stage smoke, replacement cigarettes and Russian cigarettes, and the shots of weapons are used in this stage production.
