Bella figura

Yasmina Reza

This performance has one intermission and lasts 2 hours.

Yasmina Reza has written this play. I have previously directed her plays Art and Angel of Destruction.  As an author, she suits me since on the one hand she is very realistic and on the other hand she knows how to see cracks in that ordinariness, out of which seeps intense divine light. The kind of light that we do not necessarily see in everyday life.

Bella figura. At first it may seem that the title refers to the summer company picnic of a modelling agency, but no. This is far more intriguing. A man cheats on his wife with a nice young lady and gets caught. And it happens in such a dumb way, at a restaurant in front of everybody. His wife’s best girlfriend sees them. But then things start unfolding and unfolding and unfolding just as things always do in a seafood restaurant. It takes time to peel crustaceans but the meat inside is tasty. And we still end up arriving at the fact that the externally visible portrait of people is something altogether different than their actual intentions. That is what Bella figura means as an image – try to be nice. I hope you get to laugh and cry.
