Uncle Aare

Hendrik Toompere

I was on vacation in the countryside when one fine day I found my late uncle Aare’s employment record book. I discovered that he had held more than fifty jobs over the course of his lifetime. From the end of the 1960’s to the mid-1970’s when he worked as a boatswain on a fishing fleet ship, he managed to switch jobs 28 times. He started out as a boatswain but a week later he had for some reason been made a foremastman. A week later he was a radio operator, then a boatswain again, and then was again demoted to foremastman. Incidentally, a job such as artistic director of the Rakvere Theatre is also listed. I have no idea how he pulled that off. Guess he had an acquaintance there who got him that job when the position was vacant. So he ended up working there for six months.

Then I started thinking how checkered and eventful the life of a person in his youth had been and what the big dreams of a simple person could be like. He graduated from school top of the class, then worked in the USSR, and a million things besides. So this is a story about a simple, ordinary person whose life is extraordinarily complicated, interesting and eventful regardless of the fact that he has no particular effect whatsoever on his surroundings. In my opinion, this kind of life outlines our recent past very well.
