Drought and Rain in Põlva Parish in the Summer of ‘14

Madis Kõiv, Aivo Lõhmus

Drought and Rain is a very rich, very multi-layered play. It is simultaneously the story of a farm family, a genuine story of the Võru language and land, a story of Estonia at the start of the past century, and a story of Europe – in that drought summer of 1914 when they were all swept into the fiery whirlwind of world war.

This play, which appeared in 1987, tells the story of Madis Kõiv’s family, the different events, people and memories which he continually illuminated in his various works. In the case of his collaboration with Aivo Lõhmus on Drought and Rain, they had a connecting hinterland and Võru County childhood landscapes in common, and a friendship born on the basis of ‘blood and country’, as Kõiv later said. The wondrous Võru language is heard here in all of its richness and figurativeness, and is surely understandable even to Northern Estonians with a sensitive ear for language.
