Old Times

Harold Pinter

Do you remember your first meeting with your Beloved? What was the weather like that day, what was she wearing, what music was playing… Did you meet in a movie theatre or at a social get-together? Did she smile in a kind of special way, make a distinctive gesture characteristic only of her, do something that belongs only to the Memory of the two of you? Be prepared – everything could have been completely different.

A well-to-do married couple meets a former girlfriend of the wife for the first time in over twenty years. This woman now lives in Sicily. In an idyllic country house with the autumn sea roaring behind the windows, the conversation naturally drifts to old times. Sad melodies guide them into the unknown because the past is actually just as fluid as the future.

Harold Pinter, the great innovator and master of style of British drama, lays open the twists and turns of memory, and the tangles and intertwinings of power, love and friendship in the outrageous way that only he is capable of. Or was it some other writer? Is this play about something altogether different? WHO CAME TO VISIT US?
