The Dunners (The Merchant of Venice)

William Shakespeare´i põhjal

Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice is one of the most famous stories about borrowing and debts. We all live a life of debts. Everything is borrowed. We are all indebted to future. We are also indebted to our ancestors, thanks to whose efforts we exist in the first place. We are indebted to each other. We have not only borrowed money from banks but also feelings and relationships. Is there something in this life that is truly ours? Maybe it’s love… We’ll see. Maybe life is just one big lottery. Some people are lucky, some are not.

A young man in love asks his friend, a rich Venice merchant, to be a guarantor for a big loan. In order to protect his business interests, the merchant loans money from banker Shylock. However, in the contract it says in small letters that if the loan is not paid back in time, the banker can cut off 400 grams of meat from the guarantor right above the heart. And so the merchant, who has solvency problems because of natural disasters, becomes the victim of the contract. This is the price one has to pay for a loan taken for love. But there is always a way out of a hopeless situation.
