A dOll's HouSe, paRt 2

Lucas Hnath

Lucas Hnath’s play “A Doll’s House, Part 2” is based on Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House. While Ibsen’s play ends with Nora leaving home, when she leaves behind her husband and three children, the second part begins with Nora’s return fifteen years later. Hnath has structured his play on dialogues. One after another, Nora has to face the maid who was like a mother to her, then Nora’s husband, and then her daughter. While women’s role in 19th century society was at the centre of Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, Hnath uses Ibsen’s characters in order to examine whether it is at all possible to emerge as a winner from such a collapse of a family, and to what extent this is pure selfishness.
