In a secluded village nestled within the woods, the lifeless body of a man, known for his involvement in poaching, is discovered in his dwelling. Janina Duszejko, his neighbor, firmly believes that this is the result of retaliation from the wild animals. Despite sharing her conviction with the authorities, her solitary existence amidst the woods diminishes her credibility in their eyes. However, as another enigmatic death befalls the village, Janina’s assertions gain further credence.
This theatrical adaptation draws inspiration from the eponymous novel penned by contemporary Polish writer Olga Tokarczuk. Genre-wise, it has been characterized as both a crime novel and an eco-thriller. In 2018, Olga Tokarczuk was honored with the Nobel Prize for Literature.
